Diversity is Disaster! Diversity is Not Strength!

Diversity, a melting pot of races, religion, nationalities is strength. That is the mantra of anti-racists.

Diversity is so important that terror and mass murder are a small price to pay.

Diversity Is Strength! It`s Also…Oh, Wait, Make That “Weakness ...

Last month. Putnam finally published an article about his lavishly-funded 2000 survey of 41 American communities that found that ethnic diversity, especially immigrant diversity, damages trust and "social capital."

Putnam's data is important, but the spin he worked on for five years to prevent it from being used by "racists and anti-immigration activists" is in some ways even more significant.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51GpVT7tYoL.jpg

Putnam, the author of the bestseller Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community and a former Carter Administration official now a Harvard political scientist, is hugely influential. Madeleine Bunting explained in the U.K.'s Guardian (June 18, 2007) in "Immigration is bad for society, but only until a new solidarity is forged:"

"You can spot traces of his influence all over New Labour policy. He was the man who popularised the concept of social capital - the trust and networks of friendship, neighbourhood and organisations on which so much of our lives depend - and it has won him the ear of politicians of all persuasions: Bill Clinton, George Bush, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, even, most recently, the Libyan leader, Muammar Gadafy."

Putnam's survey results briefly surfaced in the media in 2001, when I wrote about it in a VDARE.com column entitled " Diversity Causes Bowling Alone." I offered personal anecdotes to illustrate Putnam's finding that living in an immigrant neighborhood makes residents less likely to volunteer.

After that, however, Putnam maintained virtual radio silence on the subject of his huge study for five years, until he gave an indiscreet interview to John Lloyd, a columnist for the Financial Times, in the fall of 2006. Lloyd wrote:

"His research shows that the more diverse a community is, the less likely its inhabitants are to trust anyone – from their next-door neighbour to the mayor. … 'In the presence of diversity, we hunker down,' he said. 'We act like turtles. The effect of diversity is worse than had been imagined. And it's not just that we don't trust people who are not like us. In diverse communities, we don't trust people who do look like us.'" [Study paints bleak picture of ethnic diversity October 8, 2006] [...]

Now, at long last, Putnam has published his 38-page paper, "E Pluribus Unum: Diversity and Community in the Twenty-first Century", in the June 2007 issue of Scandinavian Political Studies. And it's easy to see why he was so reticent for so long.

Between his opening and closing "diversity happy-talk," his quantitative middle section — "Immigration and Diversity Foster Social Isolation" — is a social science barnburner:

"… in terms of the effect on neighbourly trust, the difference between living in an area as homogeneous as Bismarck, North Dakota, and one as diverse as Los Angeles is roughly as great as the difference between an area with a poverty rate of 7 percent and one with a poverty rate of 23 percent, or between an area with 36 percent college graduates and one with none."

And that's not all:

"However, a wide array of other measures of social capital and civic engagement are also negatively correlated with ethnic diversity. In areas of greater diversity, our respondents demonstrate:

"Lower confidence in local government, local leaders and the local news media.

"Lower political efficacy – that is, confidence in their own influence.

"Lower frequency of registering to vote, but more interest and knowledge about politics and more participation in protest marches and social reform groups.

"Less expectation that others will cooperate to solve dilemmas of collective action (e.g., voluntary conservation to ease a water or energy shortage).

"Less likelihood of working on a community project.

"Lower likelihood of giving to charity or volunteering.

"Fewer close friends and confidants.

"Less happiness and lower perceived quality of life.

"More time spent watching television and more agreement that 'television is my most important form of entertainment.'

Putnam went on to subdivide a neighborhood's ethnic diversity into "percent black" and "percent immigrant" and found that immigration had the worse effect:

"For the primary indicators of social capital discussed earlier (i.e. social trust, community attachment and sociability) each of these two separate measures of diversity has a significant and independent negative effect, though percent immigrant seems to have a somewhat more consistent and powerful effect."

Unfortunately, Putnam wrapped his meat in a sandwich of the stalest bread. The Guardian explains:

"What makes Putnam nervous now is how this could be seized upon by rightwing politicians hostile to immigration. So he insists his research be seen in the context a) that ethnic diversity is increasing in all modern societies and is not only inevitable but is also desirable, a proven asset in terms of creativity and economic growth; and b) that 'hunkering' can be short term and 'successful immigrant societies create new forms of social solidarity.' In conversation, he emphasises the latter …"

The first section of Putnam's paper — "The Prospects and Benefits of Immigration and Ethnic Diversity" — offers a gullible explanation of how immigration is good for us. For example:

"Creativity in general seems to be enhanced by immigration and diversity (Simonton 1999). Throughout history, for example, immigrants have accounted for three to four times as many of America's Nobel Laureates, National Academy of Science members, Academy Award film directors and winners of Kennedy Center awards in the performing arts as native-born Americans."

Putnam ignores the obvious difference between elite immigration by, say, Enrico Fermi and Alfred Hitchcock compared to illegal immigration. In contrast, the almost thirty million residents of America of Mexican origin have contributed remarkably little creativity to American culture and science. For example, although Mexicans are by far the biggest immigrant group, they don't even rank among the top 20 immigrant groups in the U.S. in terms of patents awarded.

But Putnam's third section — "Becoming Comfortable with Diversity" — is even worse. It mostly repeats the Ellis Island clichés about how the immigration of a century ago all worked out fine and dandy, so what's to worry about the new immigration "in the medium to long run?"

But how can the "medium to long run" arrive to overcome the negative effects of diversity if the government continues to keep the pedal to the metal on letting in low human capital immigrants?

Not surprisingly, Putnam only vaguely mentions the immigration restriction acts of 1921 and 1924 that played such a huge role.

Furthermore, I am tired of intellectuals in Boston, New York, and Washington D.C acting as if Mexicans in America are such an utter novelty that nobody could possibly have any indication of how they will turn out, so who can say they won't progress just like Italians and Jews?

Well, anybody in the Southwest can.

In reality, we've had sizable Hispanic communities in the United States since the 1840s, such as in the Upper Rio Grande River valley of New Mexico. That state has long been the most Hispanic in the nation.

So how is New Mexico doing after seven generations of Hispanic assimilation? On Meet the Press recently, Tim Russert gave New Mexico governor and Presidential candidate Bill Richardson an unfairly hard time that said less about the politician than about his constituents:

"They rank states in a whole variety of categories from one being the best, 50th being the worst. This is New Mexico's scorecard, and you are the governor. Percent of people living below the poverty line, you're 48. Percent of children below, 48. Median family income, 47. People without health insurance, 49. Children without health insurance, 46. Teen high school dropouts, 47. Death rate due to firearms, 48. Violent crime rate, 46."

We are Not a Melting Pot. Diversity is Not our Strength

So what has America gained from its multi-decade project in 3rd world diversity? Apart from more restaurants serving meat and rice, nothing.  As of 2010, 71% of Hispanic immigrant households were on some form of government welfare compared to 39% of native households. As of 2013, that number was 91.4% for Middle Eastern refugees. In fact, not including later welfare expenditures, resettling one refugee costs US taxpayers almost $13,000 per year. Are these the people making us stronger via diversity? It sounds an awful lot like they’re making us a soup kitchen. 3rd world migrants tend to come from violent, tribal, and outrageously intolerant societies. Are we to assume only “nice” 3rd world immigrants come to America? Nearly 80% of undocumented Central American women and children are raped by other illegal immigrants during their trek across the US border. The idea that immigrants who live in horribly violent societies will simply drop those tendencies once they’re on American soil is utter nonsense. Illegal 3rd world aliens make up over a quarter of the federal prison population and commit murders and sexual assaults five to ten times as often as native-born Americans. America’s “melting pot” was not supposed to include this much rape in the broth.
Predictably, our politicians have learned precisely zero from this migration catastrophe. Should she win the election, Hillary Clinton has promised to import 65,000 Syrian refugees to our shores. Western Europe has experimented with Middle Eastern immigration for nearly four decades and it’s gone about as well as you’d expect. Sweden and Denmark suddenly have the highest number of sexual assaults in all of Europe, nearly 70% of French prisoners are Muslim, ungovernable Muslim ghettos are everywhere, and migrant welfare consumption has left European coffers with nothing but spider webs and IOUs. The gruesome, almost weekly terror attacks committed by Islamic militants are also unwelcome baggage.  At home, Somali immigrant communities in Maine and Minnesota have shared great, exotic traditions like sex slavery, credit card fraud, and insurance scams. Apart from warm and fuzzies, can the open borders crowd describe any tangible benefit to US citizens from importing Middle Eastern migrants?
Violence, poverty, and corruption in the third world are a direct result of the traditions and customs of the people who live there. A simple plane flight won’t change that. If fresh-off-the-tarmac Somali refugees are given US citizenship like any other native born, then US citizenship means nothing.

After the slaughter of soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009 by a Muslim army major yelling, “Allahu Akbar!” President Obama warned Americans not to “jump to conclusions”— namely, the obvious conclusion that the attack was an act of Islamic terrorism. As conclusions go, it wasn’t much of a jump. Army chief of staff General George Casey went on Meet the Press and said, “As horrific as this tragedy was, if our diversity becomes a casualty, I think that’s worse.” Evelyn Waugh couldn’t have written it better.

Is Diversity a Strength for America?

[Please read the entire article: Is Diversity a Strength for America? | American Renaissance]

The subject of this debate is whether diversity is a strength for the United States. As you know, from President Obama on down, all you ever hear is people telling you that racial diversity is a strength. Not just a strength, but maybe even our country’s greatest strength.
They’re wrong. Racial diversity is not a strength. It is a grinding, permanent source of conflict and tension, not just in the United States but everywhere in the world where there is racial diversity.
Racial diversity means the presence of more than one race. So let’s imagine, just for a moment, how the history of the United States would have been different without the racial diversity that resulted from bringing blacks here. What would American history be like with no blacks? There would never have been slavery. There would never have been the American civil war — which killed more Americans than all our other wars combined. There would have been no Jim Crow, no segregated schools, no civil rights movement, no busing, no race riots.
And it makes no difference if you want to put 100 percent of the blame for all these things on white people. The fact remains that the historical balance sheet for black/white racial diversity in the United States is hugely, crushingly negative. If you remove black/white racial diversity, you remove slavery, our most deadly war, and our most murderous civil disturbances. The very worst parts of our history vanish. How can something that brought about all that horror be a strength? I would be the winner in this debate if I sat down right now. [...]

And again, whites and blacks have a completely different view of reality. Where did the Black Lives Matter movement really take off? In Ferguson, after a white policeman shot Michael Brown. When the officer who shot Brown was not indicted, 64 percent of whites thought that was the right decision. Only 4 percent of blacks thought so. This is a huge difference. It was the very same event, but blacks and white saw it completely differently.
Now, to win this debate, I don’t have to convince you that white people were right and black people were wrong. My job is much easier. All I have to do is point out to you that blacks and whites look at exactly the same thing and see something completely different, and for you to realize that that is not a strength. To have people so divided by race that they don’t even see the same things means perpetual, agonizing conflict. [...]
Thomas A. Kochan, a professor at MIT has probably researched corporate diversity more thoroughly than anyone. The first thing he did was contact 20 major companies that brag about their diversity, and asked them to tell him what diversity had done for them. He was astonished to learn that not one company had done a study on how diversity might have increased profits or improved operations. They had nothing to show him.
After five years of studying corporate diversity, he found that the more diversity there was, the more conflict and tension there was, and the more likely people were to quit. His conclusion: “The diversity industry is built on sand.”
People who praise diversity like to point to a 2007 book by Scott Page of the University of Michigan. The book is called The Difference: How the Power of Diversity Creates Better Groups, Firms, Schools, and Societies. Sounds great. Finally, here’s proof of the strength of diversity, right? No. Scott Page is writing about the importance of different points of view and problem-solving techniques. When it comes to racial diversity, he writes this:
Lots of strange things can happen in a diverse group that would not be likely to happen among homogeneous people — including physical and verbal violence. . . . [v] The more different we are the less we agree. . . . [vi] Group dynamics can create no end of problems. People prefer to hang with people like themselves. [vii]
This is just common sense. In fact, a large-scale survey called the National Study of the Changing Workforce found that more than half of all workers said they preferred to work with people who were not only of the same race, but also the same sex and same level of education. [viii]

Will Orlando Change Anything? [Amren]

Note: Author Thomas Sowell is Black. An intelligent Black person not polluted by anti-racism

Thomas Sowell, Town Hall, June 14, 2016

{snip}
Is diversity our strength? Or anybody’s strength, anywhere in the world? Does Japan’s homogeneous population cause the Japanese to suffer? Have the Balkans been blessed by their heterogeneity–or does the very word “Balkanization” remind us of centuries of strife, bloodshed and unspeakable atrocities, extending into our own times?
Has Europe become a
safer place after importing vast numbers of people from the Middle East, with cultures hostile to the fundamental values of Western civilization?
{snip}
The recent wave of refugees flooding into Europe include Muslim men who have been haranguing European women on the streets for not dressing modestly enough, not to mention their sexual molestation of those women.
Smug elites in Europe, like their counterparts in America, are not nearly as concerned about such things as they are about preventing “Islamophobia.” Legal restrictions on free speech in some European countries make it a crime to sound the alarm about the dangers to the culture and to the people.
{snip}
America’s great good fortune in the past has been that Americans have been able to unite as Americans against every enemy, despite our own internal differences and struggles. Black and white, Jew and Gentile, have fought and died for this country in every war.
It has not been our diversity, but our ability to overcome the problems inherent in diversity, and to act together as Americans, that has been our strength.
{snip}
Unfortunately, there is remarkably little interest in the relevant facts about crime rates, disease rates, welfare dependency or educational deficiencies among immigrants from specific countries. Most debates about immigration policies are contests in rhetoric, with hard facts being ignored as if they didn’t exist.
Tragically, the massacre in Orlando seems unlikely to change that. Too many people have too much invested in their own particular position to change, especially in an election year.

Radio Derb Is On The Air: Air Force Has Fewer Pilots, More Diversity Initiatives, Etc.

Radio Derb is on the air—go here to listen, here to download the MP3. Sample quote:

Our military is totally signed on to our state ideology of diversity. This comes from the top, from the civilian leadership. The Secretary of the Army, Eric Fanning, for example, is openly homosexual.

131217-f-fc975-043The Secretary of the Air Force seems not to be homosexual, but she is a female, and strongly committed to diversity. She has a problem there, though. Quote from a news report, October 2nd, quote:

There are still numerous key positions that don’t seem to attract diverse candidates, namely pilots, cyber operations, intelligence operations and space and missile operations, which is very upsetting to Air Force officials.

End quote. Poor things! I can imagine how upset they must be. Not to worry, though: the Secretary of the Air Force is on the case. Last year she introduced nine initiatives to increase diversity in the service — to, as she explains, make the demographics of the service match more closely with the changing demographics of America.

Alas, last year’s nine initiatives didn’t do the trick. Transgendered black Hispanics still don’t want to fly fighter jets. So this month the Secretary, Deborah Lee James, announced thirteen new initiatives. More initiatives! More initiatives!

Meanwhile, in totally unrelated news, the Air Force is desperately short of pilots and mechanics: 700 pilots and 4,000 mechanics short.

That’s distressing, to be sure; but so long as Secretary James is on the case, at least the service won’t be short of initiatives.

High Integration Means Big Racial Gaps in School Test Scores

From the New York Times:

As Other Districts Grapple With Segregation, This One Makes Integration Work

By KYLE SPENCER DEC. 12, 2016

MORRISTOWN, N.J. —

The 5,226-student district is one of the few in the country created through such a merger as part of a court-ordered integration effort, and one of even fewer that still endure. Even as communities around the country have been debating how to address school segregation, with some proposals for integration meeting fierce opposition, a new report from the Century Foundation, a left-leaning think tank, calls Morris a model of “diversity and togetherness.”

… The Morris district is notable in that it has long been committed to diversity, even as the composition of its student body has changed. Meanwhile, schools nearby and in New York City have remained deeply segregated.

It’s worth noting that according to the Stanford Education Data Archive of school test scores, which I wrote about for Taki’s Magazine last spring, Morris has the 94th worst white-black test score gap out of more than 2000 school districts nationwide. Morris’s white-Hispanic test score gap is even more of a chasm: Morris comes in 29th worst in the entire country.

Generally speaking, liberal and wealthy districts suffer the worst racial disparities in school achievement. For example, the most gaping white-black disparity in the entire United States is found in Berkeley, CA.

The most impressive combinations of diversity, high average test scores, and modest racial gaps tend to be found in Texas exurbs, such as Frisco, the new home of the Dallas Cowboys.

… Paul Tractenberg, a professor emeritus at Rutgers Law School and the president of the Center for Diversity and Equality in Education, who co-wrote the Century Foundation report, says the [Morris, NJ] district has a “remarkable can-do attitude” that has allowed officials to continuously “rejigger what they are doing to accommodate the demands of the moment.”

The pertinent La Griffe du Lion essay is of course: http://www.lagriffedulion.f2s.com/diversity.htm “Where I come from, diversity just means you have to lock your bicycle up.” — Fred Reed

Diversity discriminates against Whites

Japanese Refuse To Declare Foreigners Born In Japan To Be Japanese Citizens

Japan deals with immigration in the best interests of the Japanese people, culture, and nation. But many want to impose multiculturalism and anarchy on Japan and the Japanese, just as those same people want to destroy the white West  and Christendom with immigration, multiculturalism, and diversity: [...]
Japan prides itself on being a consensus society. All behavior and actions from childhood on up are judged by others as to how that behavior contributes to outstanding mores and shared values. Diversity does not contribute to a peaceful, safe, and harmonious Japan. In Japan, judges are not enemies of the nation and support the political and social harmony that is both traditional and modern Japan, unlike this nation.
There are no kritarchs in Japan interfering with the immigration laws, seeking to upend the racial harmony in Japan and destroy the nation from within. Better yet, there are precious few CultMarx activists supporting illegal aliens. [Source: Japanese Refuse To Declare Foreigners Born In Japan To Be Japanese Citizens]

explaining the “rage of a privileged class” which produced people like Michelle Obama. As he notes, there is little real evidence suggesting “diversity” provides any real benefit to institutions and quite a bit suggesting it imposes real costs like the collapse of social trust. [Source]

Not an Ounce of Sympathy

But these will be future concerns. To return to the present, in the United States today, there is not an ounce of public sympathy for whites who escape when the neighborhood turns black or Mexican. The theory is that only ignorant bigots run away from non-whites, but the fact is that people with money never even have to face the problem. As a very clever man once put it, the purpose of a college education is to give people the right attitudes about minorities and the means to live as far away from them as possible.
And, indeed, college-educated, right-thinking people have come up with a whole set of mental exercises for the working class unfortunates who do not have the money to send their children to private school. The first exercise is to try as hard as possible to believe that aliens and strangers are bearers of a special gift called diversity. We are not being displaced; we are being enriched and strengthened.
Of course, the idea that racial diversity is a strength is so obviously stupid that only very intelligent people could have thought it up. There is not one multi-racial anything in America that doesn’t suffer from racial friction. Our country has established a gigantic system of laws, diversity commissions, racial watchdog groups, EEO officers, and outreach committees as part of a huge, clanking machine to regulate and try to control racial diversity — this dangerous, volatile thing that is supposed to be such a source of strength. People are so exhausted by this source of strength that they run from it the first chance they get. Families, churches, clubs, and private parties — which are not yet regulated by the government — tend to be racially homogeneous.
Nothing could be more obvious: Diversity of race or tribe or language or religion are the main reasons people kill each other on a large scale. Diversity — within the same territory — is strife, not strength.
Another comical idea is that a “diverse” workforce is somehow a great advantage for business or world trade. This is one of those giant, untested notions that otherwise skeptical people swallow without a gurgle. Ninety-nine percent of the things we buy have nothing to do with “diversity.” No one cares whether his computer was assembled by a Chinaman or a Dane or whether his bread was baked by a robot or a chimpanzee.
It does not take an Irishman to sell things to the Irish. The world’s most successful trading nations today are Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and even China, none of which has even heard of “diversity” or “tolerance.” American companies are full of blather about multi-racial workforces that “look like America” — and are constantly being whipped in their own markets by workforces that look like Yokohama.
At the same time, people seem to be too dazed by this incomprehensible diversity argument to notice that it seems to be only whites who suffer from the paralysis of homogeneity and for whom diversity is going to be such a tonic. No one is urging Howard University, which is overwhelmingly black, to recruit Hispanics or Asians so its students can benefit from racial diversity. No one is suggesting that Mexico should start an immigration program to reduce Hispanics to a minority in a few decades. But if racial diversity is such a great thing for the United States, why not for Mexico, too? Why not for Howard and for all the other “historically black” universities?
If white Americans were pouring across the border into Mexico demanding that their children be educated in English, insisting on welfare, demonstrating for ballot papers in English rather than Spanish, demanding voting rights for aliens, celebrating July 4th rather than Cinco de Mayo, could anyone trick the Mexicans into thinking this was joyous diversity? No. The Mexicans would recognize an invasion when they saw one. They would open fire.
There used to be much talk about “ugly Americans,” who traveled over-seas expecting to find hamburgers and English-speakers, and who ignorantly deprecated the quaint customs of the natives. We were supposed to be deeply ashamed of them — and they were only tourists! “Ugly Mexicans” and “ugly Haitians” come here to live permanently, but we are supposed to be endlessly sensitive to their peculiarities, and revel in the diversity of toadying to their ethnic demands.
“Racial diversity,” therefore, is strictly a one-way street. Only whites are ever expected to practice it or benefit from it. The ultimate insult is to expect whites to celebrate diversity. This is nothing less than asking them to celebrate their own capitulation, their dwindling numbers and declining influence. The astonishing thing is that so many whites actually do go through the motions of rejoicing in their decline. [Source: Not an Ounce of Sympathy]
